President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden hosted President-elect Donald Trump and Melania Trump at the White House for a pre-inauguration tea gathering.
As Trump stepped out of his limousine on Monday morning, Biden greeted him warmly with a smile, saying, “Welcome home.” This marks Trump’s second visit to the White House since his departure in 2021. His first return was in November, following Biden’s invitation for an Oval Office meeting after Trump secured re-election.
The tradition of hosting pre-inauguration tea dates back to 1837, initiated by President Martin Van Buren and President Andrew Jackson.
Following the meeting, Biden and Trump are expected to travel together to the U.S. Capitol for the swearing-in ceremony.
