Ahead of President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20th, Washington, D.C., officials held a security briefing to outline protocols designed to ensure the safety of the incoming President, dignitaries, and the public.

“Every four years, the District is proud to support the peaceful transition of power,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser. “We take pride in this responsibility, and we’re grateful to our federal partners, local agencies, and community members who work together to ensure a safe and secure event.”

Key measures include heightened police presence, fencing, and barriers across the city, alongside extensive road closures and restrictions. Most roads within the Potomac River to the west, K Street NW to the north, Second Street NE/SE to the east, and I-395/I-695 to the south will either be closed or limited to local traffic only.

Collaborative Security Effort

Security arrangements have been described as a collaborative effort involving local, state, and federal agencies. Matt McCool, Special Agent in Charge of the Secret Service’s Washington Field Office, emphasized the importance of this partnership. “The security of the 2025 Presidential Inauguration is truly a team effort. Our ultimate goal is to ensure the safety of our protectees, dignitaries, event attendees, and the public during the Inauguration.”

Chief of Police Pamela Smith reiterated the Metropolitan Police Department’s commitment, stating, “Our entire department will be activated for the Presidential Inauguration. In addition, we’ll be reinforced by thousands of officers from across the United States who generously volunteered to assist.”

Intelligence and Security Coordination

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is playing a critical role in intelligence coordination. “Leading up to and during the Presidential Inauguration, FBI special agents, intelligence analysts, and other personnel will work to assess and share intelligence with our law enforcement partners to ensure the safety of all attendees and participants,” said David Sundberg, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Washington Field Office.

Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger highlighted the exceptional cooperation among agencies. “Just this past week, agencies across the city secured two National Special Security Events. The cooperation among the Washington area law enforcement agencies is second to none,” he remarked.

Transportation Guidance

Officials have strongly encouraged those traveling through Washington, D.C., during the inauguration week to rely on public transportation, particularly Metro services, to navigate the city amid road closures and heightened security measures.
