On Monday, shortly after the inauguration of the 47th President, Donald J. Trump, the Senate successfully broke a filibuster to pass the bill. The final vote stood at 64-35.
Twelve Democratic Senators joined their Republican counterparts in favor of the legislation. These Senators included John Fetterman (D-Pa.), Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.), Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.), Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.), Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.), Gary Peters (D-Mich.), Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.), and Mark Warner (D-Va.).
The legislation now moves back to the House of Representatives for final approval.
“This bill ensures that individuals who commit crimes such as theft or assault against law enforcement officers will be detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), preventing them from returning to the streets,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) stated during the debate before the vote. “I’m eager to see this important legislation reach the president’s desk.”
